As usual I think my warm ups were my strongest work all evening. But the process of drawing and intense looking was a great boost to my creativity.
I use my life drawings as a starting point for my sewn pieces, often tracing parts and constantly referring back to them while I work.
The left drawing is Vicky, compressed charcoal on newsprint. One of the 2 minute poses, I love the movement of her leaning towards the viewer.
The second one is Julie, my favourite drawing from the sessions, it's just a pity I ran out of paper for the feet. I may be able to borrow some feet from another drawing if I decide to use the image.

Constraints of the sewing circle
This piece is made on reused fabric - a cotton serviette, and old sheet and gauze. Sewn by tracing the original sketches, and sewing through the tracing paper, then pulling it all away.
I'm loving the sketchiness of the piece, and the accidental lines produced by overlaying the images.

free hand machine embroidery
Still a work in progress, made from an image in my sketchbook, all produced freehand on the sewing machine. I normally like to be quite neat with tying up the loose ends, but I may leave them on this piece.
To me it looks like the page of a sketchbook.

We thought limiting the colours, and having a theme of dogs would be fun. We chose red for its bold statement, and it’s paid off as the pod seems to emanate a red glow into the gallery space.

Podtopia continues with an installation by Lyn Dallison and myself.
Gone To The Dogs is a collaborative installation by Lyn Dallison and Rachel Collier – Wilson.
The work of both artists is centred around domestic skills: Collier – Wilson takes traditionally rendered life drawings, drafts them onto pattern paper then machine sews them; Dallison uses fabric and thread on 3D objects to change the surface and shift the perception of the object . Hence there is a common thread.
The idea for the installation came from the challenge for the artists of doing small works for the Pod at Satellite Gallery. To maintain interest in the exhibition in the Pod both artists felt change and challenge necessary. This creates a dialogue that helps the artists move forward with new ideas.

Satallite Pod - an exhibition of small stitched pieces in the newly installed cabinets at Satellite Gallery. The cabinets allow for mini exhibitions to take place independently alongside larger exhibitions at the same time.
I have my own personal micro-gallery.

Another beautiful day, on the beach. This year I painted life images onto life saving rings. I positioned them on the rock to appear washed up. I was surprised that inflatable art was so popular.
Another beautiful day, on the beach. This year I painted life images onto life saving rings. I positioned them on the rock to appear washed up. I was surprised that inflatable art was so popular.
The life images were all women, and took on a mermaidesque quality, protective of the rock, and guardians of the beach.
